Swing that sword like the Star Wars kid

By Scott Gardner

Red Steel 2

Wii

Ever since the Wii arrived, gamers have longed to wield its controller like a virtual broadsword — hacking, slashing, dodging and twirling like that Star Wars kid. It hasn’t happened (at least not in a game — what you do when no one’s looking is your business).

Turns out the Wii-mote doesn’t handle sword-like movements very well, and the few games that tried have been clunky and simplistic. Enter Nintendo’s “Wii MotionPlus” accessory — a $20, walnut-sized gizmo that plugs into your controller. Using gyroscopes and possibly magic, it makes the Wii-mote much more sensitive, enabling a new generation of games like Red Steel 2 — a first-person slasher.

Set in a remote desert metropolis, you play the Swordsman — a Stetson- and duster-clad loner avenging something or other with his hardened steel blade and trusty six-gun. Featuring stylized graphics reminiscent of a comic book, and an East-meets-West vibe, this is a sequel in name only — good news, since the 2006 original was one of those early swordplay clunkers. The key to Red Steel 2 is the way the MotionPlus faithfully replicates your real-world movements as you thrust, slice, parry and even deflect enemy bullets.

The enhanced controller also senses the power of your swing, so no more lounging on the couch and just wiggling the Wii-mote at the TV. Separating marauding ninjas from their heads takes big, heavy blows. So move the coffee table out of the way, make an appointment with your chiropractor, and remember to wear pants, just in case some joker puts your performance up on YouTube.

God of War III

PS3

Revenge is a dish best served with fiery, chained blades welded to your wrists, as the glowering Spartan Kratos takes on the nastiest creatures of Greek mythology in his quest to humble the gods. The first two GoW games were among the PS2’s finest, so you can expect this series finale to go out with an Olympian bang.

Calling

Wii

This survival-horror creepfest begins with a cursed website that may be stealing the souls of visitors (and it’s not TMZ, but that’s a good guess). Exploring eerie, ghost-filled locales with your Wii-mote as a flashlight — no chainsaws or rocket launchers here — you solve puzzles and collect clues to defeat a terrifying supernatural force.
